About

The place, in context

Aloha Tower was designed to be read from the water. Completed in 1926 to plans by Arthur L. Reynolds, its ten storeys and 184 feet held the record as the tallest structure in Hawaii for four decades. Four clock faces, each weighing close to seven tons, ranked among the largest in the United States when they were installed. Beneath every dial sits a single word of welcome, facing north, south, east and west. Below that lighthouse, on the harbourfront at Pier 9, the Aloha Tower Ka Moana Luau now sets its tables each evening. For most of the twentieth century this was the first Hawaii that arriving passengers saw. Matson liners docked here on Boat Days, met by lei sellers, brass bands and divers working the water for coins tossed from the rails. The tower served as a harbour control station and, during the war years, as a lookout under camouflage paint. It joined the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. The marketplace at its feet opened in 1994 and now shares the pier with a university campus, so a Honolulu Harbor luau here unfolds inside a working waterfront rather than on a resort lawn. The feast itself has an older lineage. The word lūʻau names the taro leaf cooked in coconut milk, and the communal meal took its modern shape after 1819, when Kamehameha II broke the kapu that had kept men and women eating apart. The imu, an underground oven of hot stones and ti leaves, still does the essential work; kālua pork goes in at dawn and comes out at dusk. Polynesian revues layered on later additions — hula kahiko to the ipu heke, Tahitian ʻōteʻa, the Samoan fire knife. Aloha Tower Ka Moana Luau tours carry all of it, staged against container cranes and the low outline of Diamond Head. What distinguishes the setting is water on three sides and the clock overhead, lit after sunset. Ships still pass. Trade winds move through the open pavilion. Oahu holds several long-running shows, from Waikiki hotel lawns to west-shore beaches, yet few sit this close to the channel that carried Hawaii's arrivals for a century. Aloha Tower Ka Moana Luau tickets place a visitor at that exact seam between city, port and ocean.

"Aloha Tower was designed to be read from the water, and it still faces the harbour it once welcomed."
Your experience

What a tour day looks like

A step-by-step walkthrough of the visit — what you'll see, how long each stage takes, and the details that matter.

You arrive at 1 Aloha Tower Drive just as check-in opens at 16:45, and the harbour is still full of light. A lei goes over your head at the gate. The base package runs 129 USD per person and covers dinner, the activities and the show, so nothing else needs deciding once you are through the door. You spend the first stretch moving between craft tables: lauhala weaving, kapa stamping, a ukulele lesson, a temporary tattoo pressed on with a wooden stamp. You watch the imu opened — hands lifting burlap and ti leaves, steam going straight up, kālua pork carried past you to the carving station. You find a seat at a long table facing the channel and eat poi, lomi salmon, poke and haupia while a trio plays steel guitar. Then the light drops. Torches go up along the pier. You follow the dances south through the Pacific — hula ʻauana, Maori haka, Tahitian drums that speed until the dancers blur — and finish with a fire knife spinning against dark water. By 20:00 the clock faces are lit above you. You walk back out along Pier 9, and the Aloha Tower Ka Moana Luau tour ends where the ships come in.
